Cortisol Test Details

Blood Cortisol Test

A blood sample is usually taken in the morning between 7 and 9 AM when cortisol levels are at their highest. In some cases, a second sample is requested in the evening to compare the normal decrease in hormone levels throughout the day.
This test helps determine the balance of adrenal gland secretion and monitor its disorders.

Urine Cortisol Test

This test is performed by collecting the patient’s urine over a full 24 hours to measure the amount of cortisol the body secretes during the day. This type is considered one of the most accurate methods for assessing cortisol production, especially when increased adrenal gland activity is suspected.

Saliva Cortisol Test

This test is used to assess daily changes in cortisol levels, and is often performed in the evening or before bedtime. It is characterized by ease of sample collection and no need for needles, and is considered an accurate method for detecting sleep disorders or chronic stress.

Cortisol Test Results

• Elevated cortisol hormone levels may indicate:
  • Cushing’s syndrome.
  • Chronic stress or anxiety.
  • Use of medications containing cortisone.
  • Presence of tumors in the adrenal or pituitary glands.
• Low cortisol levels may indicate:
  • Addison’s disease.
  • Adrenal gland insufficiency.
  • Pituitary gland disorders.

Preparation Before Performing the Cortisol Hormone Test

• It is preferable to perform the test in the morning after rest.
• You must inform the physician about any medications being taken, especially cortisone or hormonal contraceptives.
• Avoid stress or excessive physical activity before sample collection.
