Insulin Resistance Test Details – HOMA-IR Test

What is the Insulin Resistance Test?

A blood test aimed at measuring the body’s response to insulin hormone, usually performed through the HOMA-IR test which relies on measuring fasting glucose and fasting insulin levels.

Why is the HOMA-IR Test Requested?

  • For early detection of type 2 diabetes risk.
  • To assess obesity and increased waist circumference.
  • When polycystic ovary syndrome is present in women.
  • In case of elevated triglycerides or blood pressure.
  • To monitor individuals with a family history of heart disease or diabetes.

How the Test is Performed

  1. Fasting for 8–12 hours before sample collection.
  2. Blood sample collection from the vein.
  3. Measuring glucose and insulin levels.
  4. Calculating the HOMA-IR index to determine the degree of insulin resistance.

Interpreting Results

  • Normal values: Good insulin response with no issues.
  • Elevated values: Indication of existing or developing insulin resistance, requiring medical follow-up and a treatment or preventive plan.

Post-Test Recommendations

  • Consult your physician for accurate interpretation of results.
  • Adopt a healthy diet low in sugars and saturated fats.
  • Engage in regular physical activity.
  • Lose weight if obesity is present.
